From long-haul flights to daily routines, the viral “rawdogging” trend – going completely phone-free – is quickly becoming part of everyday culture, with over 45 million posts on TikTok alone. Now, KitKat is challenging Aussies to rawdog their commute, using the NEW KitKat Phone Break game.
New research from KitKat reveals that 84% of Australians are craving a break from their phones. The consequences of constant scrolling are all too familiar on the daily commute: missed stops, bumped shoulders, and accidental glimpses into strangers’ messages.
The challenge invites commuters to play a game and see how long they can take a break from their phone, rewarding longer breaks with more chances to win 1 of 10 Unyoked 2-night weekend escape eGift cards for use in Australia, valued at up to $626.* (Flights & travel expenses not included.*) https://www.unyoked.co/
Aussie phone use is out of hand
- A third (33%) of Aussies are clocking 35+ hours of screen time a week
- 81% admitting it’s increased over the past year
- Half of Aussies are trying to cut back, almost a third want to, but have no idea how
- A third (33%) say they spend their entire commute glued to their phones.
- The commute has become peak brainrot time – with Aussies clocking up to 208 hours a year deep in a scroll-hole (that’s roughly 4–9 full days a year).
A Break makes us better
- Among those who have accidentally gone without their phone, 40% say they felt happier, freer, relieved or more present
- Nearly a quarter (23%) of all Aussies believe being phone-free would make their commute more relaxing
KitKat making “doing nothing” feel like something
The KitKat ‘Rawdog your Commute' Challenge makes switching off simple. Players scan a QR code displayed on billboards near commuting locations or visit www.kitkat.com.au/phonebreakgame using their mobile phone to start a timer, timing how long they can go without touching their phone.
Nestlé Oceania Head of Marketing Confectionery, Shannon Wright, said: “KitKat has always been about helping Aussies take better breaks, but today, switching off isn’t so easy. That’s why we’re challenging commuters to rawdog their commutes with our new Phone Break game; making it feel achievable by rewarding small, everyday moments turned into a proper break.”
