There’s more to sustainable cocoa than a logo on pack
To make great chocolate you need great cocoa
With KitKat the first global confectionery brand to be made with 100 per cent certified sustainable cocoa, Nestlé knows that there’s more to sustainable cocoa than just the logo on pack.
At Nestlé, we want to be part of a system that takes care of the people and environment that make our brands possible. Since its launch over a decade ago, we have worked with cocoa-growing communities through the Nestlé Cocoa Plan to guide us to build a brighter future for cocoa farmers, improve the lives of those in cocoa communities and create strong roots for better quality cocoa.
What sits behind the Nestlé Cocoa Plan logo?
Making better cocoa begins with improving the lives of the people who grow it.
Life can be challenging where cocoa is grown. That’s why we are working with cocoa farmers to help them reduce disease in crops, improve the quality of their cocoa, rejuvenate plantations and manage their land sustainably. In 2019, the Nestlé Cocoa Plan covered 109,000 farmers across Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Cameroon, Indonesia, Brazil, Ecuador, Mexico and Venezuela.
From farmers, to their families, we are helping to bring about better futures for people in cocoa-growing communities. This has included building or refurbishing 53 schools in cocoa growing communities since 2012, benefitting 20,000 children.
When women can read, communities benefit. Maternal literacy is a key factor in improving the wellbeing, nutrition and future of children. The Nestlé Cocoa Plan offers popular literacy schemes for mothers in the communities where we operate. Since 2012, almost 1,000 women have benefited from the maternal literacy program.
Of course, chocolate wouldn’t be possible without cocoa trees. Since 2009, over 15 million cocoa plants have been distributed to farmers, helping their farms to grow significantly more cocoa.
It’s more than just KitKat – as a result of the work we have done through the Nestlé Cocoa Plan, every chocolate block and bar Nestlé makes for Australia and New Zealand is made from Rainforest Alliance Certified™ cocoa.
From bean to bar, we believe in producing a product that benefits everyone. Find out more about the Nestlé Cocoa Plan.
