Infant formula issue

Following the detection of a quality issue with an ingredient for infant nutrition products provided by a supplier, Nestlé has undertaken testing of all arachidonic acid (ARA) oil and corresponding oil mixes used in the production of our infant nutrition products. There have been no confirmed cases of illness caused by the products involved to date.

We are in contact with authorities to ensure the necessary steps are taken. Nestlé assures parents and caregivers that it is implementing appropriate actions to help ensure the health and wellbeing of families and their babies.

At the same time, we are working to minimise any potential supply disruption.

Nestlé remains committed to keeping parents, caregivers and the public informed, and to providing clear, transparent information and support throughout this process.

Which brands are impacted?

In Australia, select batches of ALFAMINO infant formula are being recalled as a precautionary measure due to the potential presence of cereulide.

Rest assured, the product recall does not affect any other ALFAMINO products. There is no recall of NAN sold in Australia.

What is cereulide?

Cereulide is produced by the microorganism Bacillus cereus in one of the ingredients supplied for the batches concerned. The presence of cereulide in oils is very uncommon, and Nestlé is working with the oil supplier, who is conducting a full root-cause analysis.

How do I check if I have an affected product?

Consumers should check the product packaging for the product Batch number and Use by date. The Use by date and Batch number are on the bottom of the tin. The Batch number is printed below the Use by date (see example below).

What should I do if I have purchased or used the recalled formula?

First, if you have any concerns about your child's health or nutrition, we advise you to talk to your paediatrician or healthcare provider.

If your product is part of the recall, you should stop using it immediately and return the product to the retailer where it was purchased for a full refund or replacement (where available).

What are the symptoms I should look for? What should I do if my child shows signs of being unwell?

There have been no confirmed cases of illness caused by the products involved to date.

Regardless of whether symptoms are present, parents and caregivers are instructed to discontinue use of any recalled product batches.

Symptoms to look out for are severe or persistent vomiting, diarrhoea, or unusual lethargy, and these would typically appear between 30 minutes to 6 hours after any exposure. If no symptoms are displayed, there is no cause for concern of any health impact.
