The Nestlé Cocoa Plan

The Nestlé Cocoa Plan was launched in 2009 with the aim of improving the lives of cocoa farmers, their families and their communities. The CHF110 million ($AU138 million) Plan takes a holistic approach to problems in the cocoa industry, addressing the productivity and profitability of cocoa crops, challenges in the supply chain, ageing trees, the use of child labour on farms and training. The Plan is active in Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Ecuador, Venezuela, Mexico and Indonesia.

The Nestlé Cocoa Plan includes:

  • Supplying farmers with 12 million higher yielding, disease-resistant cocoa trees.
  • Training cocoa farmers on efficient farming methods and responsible work practices.
  • Working with the World Cocoa Foundation to refurbish and build 40 schools.
  • Paying a premium to cocoa farmers for sustainably sourced cocoa.

Nestlé’s vision has been to help cocoa farmers run profitable farms, respect the environment and enjoy a good quality of life; and for their children to benefit from an education and see cocoa farming as a respectable profession.

This is a vision we share with UTZ Certified, one of the largest sustainability programs for cocoa, and a highly credible not-for-profit organisation which shares our long term commitment to improving conditions for cocoa farmers, while understanding the realities and challenges we face on the ground.

Nestlé Action Plan on Women in the Cocoa Supply Chain


Oxfam’s ‘Behind the Brands’ survey in February ranked companies according to their policies in seven areas: transparency, farmers, women, agricultural workers, access to land, water and climate change.

Nestlé received the highest score in this survey, however Oxfam suggested one of the areas in which we needed to improve was protecting and promoting women’s rights. In response we launched an Action Plan later in the year setting out a plan to promote and support the lives of women in the cocoa supply chain. We have asked the Fair Labour Association (FLA) to put an additional focus on gender issues when conducting its independent assessments of our cocoa supply chain in Cote d’Ivoire.

Eventually the Action Plan will be extended to Ghana, Indonesia, and Ecuador and other countries that are part of the Nestlé Cocoa Plan. We will continue to work with all our partners including the International Cocoa Initiative (ICI) and other stakeholders to make gender issues a mainstream part of existing programs across the cocoa sector.

Australia and New Zealand were the first major chocolate manufacturer to use UTZ Certified Cocoa in all our retail chocolates manufactured locally. Our baking chocolate such as Nestlé Melts and Plaistowe also moved to UTZ Certified cocoa. 46% of the cocoa we purchased was UTZ Certified with a target of 54% for 2014.


We purchased 62,299 tonnes of cocoa through the Nestlé Cocoa Plan. Rolled out child labour monitoring and remediation at eight farmer co-operatives. Built or refurbished 13 schools. Trained 33,885 cocoa farmers.
