What’s great for growing teeth and bones?
Mmm…milk! Growing bones and teeth need calcium every day to be strong and healthy. And what’s got lots of calcium? You guessed it – milk.
From the dairy to the cupboard
Milk is collected from the dairy and heated (pasteurised) to kill harmful bacteria. Then it is processed (homogenised) so the cream is mixed evenly through it.
What if you want to keep milk for a long time? Here are three ways Nestlé makes milk last longer than fresh milk.
Evaporated Milk
This is milk that has been heated until over half the water has been taken out (evaporated). Evaporated milk can be stored in unopened cans for use up to 15 months later.
Sweetened Condensed Milk
Sugar is added to homogenised milk and then over half the water is removed from it by evaporation. It is then specially processed to make it thick and smooth, before being put into cans or tubes.
From Liquid to powder
Milk powder is made when nearly all the water is taken out. The liquid milk is evaporated and then dried, using heat, until it turns into a fine, snow-like powder. It can then be stored unopened in cool dry places for up to 12 months. When you replace the water, powdered milk gives you the same goodness as fresh milk.
