Thanks to everyone for sharing your budget-conscious tips for staying warm over winter.
Here are just some of the most popular tips, plus some from Nestlé:
-
Get your entire family together in one room, close the doors and put the heater on in this room only. Snuggle together! (A.Nijhuis, SA)
-
Whether it’s playing with the WII, doing housework with enthusiasm or chasing after the kids, keep your body moving. (E.Brugger, NSW)
-
If the sun's out, I go and get some fresh air and warm up outside. It's much warmer than inside, even when the heaters on. (A.Hanna, NSW)
-
A good home cooked meal helps to warm us up and saves money. (R.Scollen, ACT)
-
I dry most laundry in the sun. If I must use the drier, it's in the coldest part of the day to warm the house. (L.Clark, QLD)
-
Dress in layers so you can put more clothes on or take them off, depending on the temperature. (J.Corsaro, NSW)
-
I open the curtains every day to let the sunshine warm up the house and close them before dusk to retain the heat. (M.Bryant, SA)
-
Bath the kids earlier in the day. If the kids start the evening cold, it's harder to get warm. (K.Butterwick, VIC)
-
Add a touch of chilli and fresh ginger to hearty winter soups. It warms you up from the inside out. (B.Auld, WA)
-
Warm up with indoor family activities, like cooking together, preparing Nestlé hot chocolates, making soups or laughing along with comedy movies. (H.Gonzalez, VIC)

Saving the planet simply
When it comes to solving global environmental problems, it’s easy to feel helpless. But here are some simple, effective and inexpensive ideas you can put into practice around your home. And they really can make a difference!
-
Washing clothes: Wash clothes in cold water: you will generate less than a third of a kilogram of greenhouse gas per wash. Heating the water for a hot wash generates up to four kilograms of greenhouse gas. Removing the lint from your dryer also reduces its energy use.
-
Heating and cooling: Setting air-conditioning/heating thermostats a couple of degrees up in summer and a couple of degrees down in winter will save energy and reduce your power bills.
-
Garden: Mulch reduces water loss through evaporation, adds nutrients to your soil and keeps the weeds at bay. Compost improves the soil quality and helps it to hold moisture so you don’t need to water as often.
-
Light bulbs: Changing to compact fluorescent light bulbs will use four times less energy than incandescent light bulbs and they can last between 4 and 10 times longer than the average incandescent bulb.
-
Swimming pool: Using a pool cover makes a big difference by reducing evaporation and keeping your pool clean. It also saves energy by reducing heat loss in heated pools, plus you’ll save money on pool chemicals.
-
Reduce, reuse and recycle: Reuse plastic bags as often as you can or buy stronger canvas or reusable shopping bags to carry home groceries from the supermarket. Recycle waste from all the bins in your house, not just the kitchen.
