Holidays are a great opportunity to relax with family and share some great food. Nestlé, working with the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS), understands that the perfect sweet treat is delicious, enjoyable, easy to prepare and nutritious.
Michelle Minehan, a sports dietitian at the AIS, says the best option for treats is to prepare your own.
Many traditional sweet recipes are based around high-fat ingredients and large quantities of sugar. However, most recipes can be improved by cutting back on the amount of butter, oil, margarine and sugar used, substituting low-fat dairy products and using fruit to provide flavour.
When sweet choices are based on fruit or dairy products they add valuable vitamins and minerals to the diet. Keep serving sizes moderate, include a family activity as part of your occasion and you have the perfect mix for a successful family holiday.
To ask Michelle a question about nutrition for healthy holidays, get further information or order a free copy of the AIS’s nutrition booklet, A Winning Diet, visit the AIS website at
