Surviving Summer Celebrations
Holidays can be hectic, with family gatherings, trips to the beach, parties, nights out and lots of indulgent food available to both you and your kids. Here are a few quick hints to keep you on the smart snacking path.
At the beach
- Freeze 100 per cent fruit juice tetra packs for icy cold drinks.
- Take a small esky with a container of chilled fruit salad to share on a hot day.
- It’s the holidays – so treat them to their favourite light ice cream or ice block on that special day out at the beach.
On the run
- Zip-lock bags make great bitesized goodie bags. Fill them with grapes, cereal or raisins.
- Individually wrapped snacks like low-fat cereal bars, dried fruit packs and air-popped popcorn fit nicely into your carrybag.
Barbecues and parties
- Before the party, feed kids nutritious snacks so they don’t have too much space for treats.
- Once the fun starts, treat them with our Barbecue choc-bananas (left) – delicious and easy.
- Fruit smoothies made with yogurt and fresh fruit make a fab, no-fuss snack for kids. Experts recommend that we have three serves of dairy a day. Remember, kids over the age of two can have reduced-fat rather than fullfat milk. A serve of dairy is a tub of yogurt, a slice of cheese or a glass of milk.
- For a healthy frozen snack, freeze passionfruit pulp in iceblock trays or place a bunch of grapes in the freezer for two hours – yum!
