Party On, Pressure Off

Take the hassle out of your festive get-togethers with our straightforward tips for successful entertaining

Parties are a great way to catch up with friends and family, but a large gathering can test the coordination and endurance of even the most experienced entertainer. Summer is the perfect time for aspiring hosts to try their hand at throwing a party; and with our suggestions for stress-free entertaining, you’ll pass the challenge with flying colours.

The key to pulling off a successful party is organisation.

Make comprehensive ‘to do’ and shopping lists, and complete as many tasks in advance as possible.

  • Decide on the main course first. If you’re having an outdoor barbie, a large cut of meat is a good option. If it’s a more formal, sit-down affair, choose a simple dish that won’t take a long time to cook and can be partially prepared in advance – marinated seafood or meat, for example.
  • If making more than one dish, choose a few recipes that can be made a day or two in advance and stored in airtight containers in the fridge.
  • Have one trusted friend ‘on call’ on the day of the party. If you find at the last minute that you need more ice or an extra ingredient, you’ll have someone who can pick it up for you.
  • During the party, it’s fine to do a bit of cleaning up – but don’t go overboard. Do small things along the way: pick up abandoned plates and glasses, stack the dishwasher… but scrubbing pots at the sink is taking it too far. If it’s a family affair, having family members help clean up is probably the norm. If it’s a more formal occasion, however, it’s a bit much to ask your guests to help – but if they do start helping, they’re probably doing it because they want to, so let them.
  • If there are kids coming, get down to your local op shop and pick up a bunch of cheap toys and games. Plonk them all in one area of the house or garden, well away from the barbecue or cooker, where parents can keep an eye on them.
Most importantly, relax. No one – and no party – is perfect. The whole reason for entertaining is to have a great time with loved ones, so remember to smile!
