Project Africa 2010 – Real People, Making a Difference

The aim of Project Africa 2010 was to assist in the improvement of the standard and quality of living for children housed at Kumasi Children’s Home, an orphanage supporting approximately 120 boys and girls, in Kumasi, Ghana.

In February 2010 the Project Africa team returned to Kumasi and worked alongside local tradesmen to assist in the renovation and improvement of Kumasi Children’s Home. The team were involved in stripping paint from walls, treating and painting ceiling panels, painting window frames, stripping floor tiles and laying concrete in bedrooms, treating and painting roof beams and general maintenance work around the orphanage grounds.

The team also handed out new shoes and socks which were generously donated by Nestlé Australia staff and teddy bears hand knitted by a team organised by staff from Nestlé Australia Head Office.

The renovation of the orphanage continued after the team left Ghana and has now been completed. All children have new bedrooms complete with fans and mosquito nets along with new bunk beds, mattresses and sheets. They also now have access to new bathrooms with plumbing, hot water systems and working toilets.

Project Africa 2009 – Real People, Real Possibilities

Habitat For Humanity (HFH) is an organisation which aids developing and disaster-struck areas by helping build homes for those in need. Seeing the impact that HFH’s work is having in our world drove Renée to establish an international network of Nestlé employees who would be willing to donate their time to help. Working with HFH became the focus for Project Africa 2009.

In March 2009, a team of 6 Nestlé Australia and 7 Nestlé USA team members embarked on their first project working with HFH in Ghana. The team travelled to Kumasi, Ghana, where they built three homes in the Kyekyewere community in the Ashanti region which is a 5 hour drive north from the capital Accra. The Project Africa team worked alongside a building crew of tradesmen from the local community who helped the Nestlé volunteers develop new skills in carpentry, rendering, cement mixing, brick laying and roofing - all done with hand tools!

The team also spent time at the Kumasi Children’s Home and the Nestlé Australia team rallied the Kyekyewere community building crew and together they spent a full day cleaning the entire orphanage. The team also hand delivered stuffed toys to the infants, a bag of school supplies for each child and purchased sorely needed new mattresses for each bed.

With this first-hand experience in seeing the plight of the orphans and their living conditions, the Project Leader Renée Enman vowed to return to Kumasi Children’s Home with a single-minded goal of raising funds to help refurbish and rebuild parts of the orphanage. This became the focus of Project Africa 2010.
